A magnet can be demagnetised by hitting it or heating it

If you take a magnet, and you significantly heat it, or repeatedly hit it, you will de-magnetise it.

De-magnetising a magnet causes the domains to no-longer point in the same direction. They will scramble and so point in random directions:
