Applied force is the general term for when one object pushes or pulls on another object

When you apply a force on an object, you apply a push or a pull force. See the diagrams below for examples of push and pull forces being applied to objects.

You tend to refer to an applied force by the type of force it is, e.g. you are applying a pushing force to this trolley:
