Friction slows moving objects down

Friction causes objects to slow down, or to travel at a lower speed than if it wasn't there.

Here is an example of Friction causing something to slow down:

Here is an example of an object moving at a constant speed down a ramp, but it would be moving down at a faster speed if friction wasn't there.
