A magnetic field is a region where a magnetic material will experience a force

You get a magnetic field around a magnetised object. Below you can see the magnetic field around a bar magnet.

When you place another magnetic material within this field, it will experience a force.

If two similar poles (NN or SS) are facing each other, the forces will be repulsive. If the poles are opposite (NS or SN) then you will get attraction. If you place an un-magnetised piece of magnetic material in a magnetic field, you will get attraction to the initial magnet.
