I know the circuit symbol for a cell

This is the circuit symbol for a cell, it can be in any orientation, but for a cell, there is only ever one of them.

You can have multiple cells in a circuit, but they must be the same way round:

If you accidentally put cells the wrong way round then they will cancel out with other cells:
